Once upon a time the trusty refrigerator not only kept our colby cold, but also doubled as a shrine to family life, thanks to magnets. Its door, adorned with a rotation of bits and bobs from wedding invites and kids art to shopping lists and overdue electricity bills, brought warmth and life the heart of the home by virtue of it's magnetism.

Increasingly these days modern fridges are hidden discretely behind cupboard doors, meaning the gradual disappearance of this sentimental display surface. We love sleek lines and uncluttered kitchens, but remain committed to the idea that every home needs a dedicated space to display everyday treasures and reminders.

Wordbits are ideal refrigerator magnets, but they're also perfect for magnet boards, magnetic walls and anywhere with steel.

Below are some of our favourite magnetic surfaces, no pins holes required!

The Twinny by Mustard Made

Mustard Made Twinny locker in Lilac colour with Mustard Wordbits letters

Strictly speaking a locker is of course not a magnet board, but it is an expansive metal surface that works in any room and doubles as a wardrobe. Mustard Made have reinvigorated lockers for the home with an on-point range of colours and styles, The Twinny being their largest. Styled here with our Mustard Made collaboration Wordbits in their eponymous colour, Mustard.

We met Joey from Growme Melbourne on Instagram soon after launching Wordbits. Trained as an architect, her sturdy and beautifully designed Moodyboards have thoughtful touches such as a shelf ledge for keys, pens and other displays, and an optional mirror attachment.

Systexx Active Magnetic by Vitrulan

M22 magnetic wallpaper by Vitrulan Germany

This one blew my mind when I discovered it... magnetic wallpaper! Officially called Systexx Active Magnetic and manufactured in Germany by Vitrulan it's available in smooth or textured surface finish, the paper is applied to walls like standard wallpaper that can be painted over with regular paint. Styled here alongside Wordbits in the London home of Victoria Summer

The Era Board by Hubsch Interior

Danish design brand bsch understood the assignment with their elegant Era Board, an object of beauty subtle enough not to detract from it's display. Available in two sizes: Medium (50x70cm) and Large (70x10cm).

Memo Board by Peg & Board

The ultimate in playful organising solutions, Peg & Board's Memo Board is available in a wide range of colours, in both portrait and landscape formats. With a handy shelf ledge and signature wobbly edge this is a great addition to playful spaces.

Magnetic Magic by Resene

Resene Magnetic Magic paint

Make the entire room your canvas with Resene's Magnetic Magic. Apply as an undercoat then layer with you choice of regular paint on top. We have used this clever product on a trade show booth to create a fun and immersive experience. Please note that Magnetic Magic (or any other magnetic paint) is not as strongly magnetic as a steel surface, so the magnets are for decorative purposes rather than holding anything up on the wall. Perfect for signage or to add playfulness to retail spaces and kids bedrooms.

Sheet by Anne Linde

Sheet magnet board by Anne Linde with Black Wordbits magnets
Anne Linde's Sheet is made from perforated steel, giving an industrial edge while maintaining a sleek silhouette sitting flush to the wall. Styled here with Wordbits in the apartment of Sophie Rolandsen, creator behind Thus the Fuss.

No matter whether you choose one of the options above or another metal surface (Shanna has some on her kitchen's extractor fan and Annabel has been known to stick them on radiators) have fun and see what sticks!
